Since its 1997 premiere, the longtime musical has been regarded as awesome by experts in the musical's tours in many cities globally. The New York Times’ Ben Brantley calls the Broadway musical as “an ode to African culture”; he shares how The Lion King evokes so much feeling when “in an instant, you're back in the 90s once more, and you've been taken to the circus for the first time. You can only be amazed at the exotic procession of animals before you.”

The Lion King shares the struggles of the little lion cub Simba, who before his time must suddenly come to terms with his fate of becoming the leader of the Pride Lands due to unjust killing of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a beloved leader by the people of the Pride Lands, suffers betrayal from from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which ends in his murder. This forces Simba into into exile for a long period of time, and this is where the Prince's long journey and his subsequent homecoming to The Pride Lands and his rightful place as King.
Inspired by the previous 1994 motion picture of the the very same name created by Disney, The play, The Lion King was accurately translated to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the astounding ensemble and crew. Its debut in the 90s was the first of its kind, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety summarizes The Lion King with very positive words in his posting, stating that “Julie Taymor's staging of this classic musical is a phenomenon, a theatrical achievement unequaled in its creativity, uniqueness, and vigor. Exceeding expectations as a film follow-up, the live showing enhances on distinct creative choices of the previous 1994 cartoon motion picture, from visual artistry and plot to Lebo M's compositions and the freshly African-based pop songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."
Disney's The Lion King was also received with the premier commendations from audiences. A specific review specifically writes about how this successful musical can appropriately be called “The best Broadway has to offer”, expressing how he felt that “the show was fantastic. It was passionately put together and the song and dance acts were phenomenal. The African savanna setting really carried the roles to life.” Most viewers who have seen the shows over the previous 20 years agree that despite being an adaptation of a movie, the musical went above and beyond the original.
This coming December’s season of The Lion King will be found in Sheas Performing Arts Center at New York on Tuesday 24th December 2024.
