You can only marvel at the exotic procession of animals before you.”

The tale of The Lion King begins in a fictional land in Africa; based in The Pride Lands, the little lion Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the actions of his jealous uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become the ruling monarch himself. The first part's sequence of occurrences leads to the little lion's banishment from The Pride Lands and the account of his ultimate return to retake his throne and his place as King.

The Lion King, since its inception, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African civilization and historical texts given its content. The narrative itself is actually founded on real African warriors and factual events – Simba as an example is the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Malian Empire who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to earn a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, particularly costume design, which resulted in a precise staging of The Lion King. The costumes in particular are perfect portrayals of several traditional tribes in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s costume in the show which as it happens inspired by Kenyan Maasi fighters' outfits. Just like the previous 1994 motion picture, the iconic musical score created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African roots, with the stage adaptation even adding songs with lyrics that are performed either partially or fully in African dialects like Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African motif is also evident in dance numbers, with several of the performances consistently featuring the grace of Bali-inspired dance.

The 3D puppetry, African influence, and lifelike stage design all work in harmony to deliver an smashing musical. On Friday 20th December 2024 and at Buffalo, the acclaimed Lion King performs in Sheas Performing Arts Center - famous to residents and foreigners for hosting the best shows and stage adaptations due to the favorite facilities and topnotch lighting design that show venues can muster.
