Jesus Christ Superstar's legendary 1970s rock score was initially issued as a game-changing album and premiered in 1971 at the renowned Mark Hellinger Theatre. It has since become a global sensation, running for more than eight years in London. With over 3,358 performances by the time it closed, it was considered the most successful musical in West End history at the time.
Originally debuting at London's renowned Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, the performance features music and lyrics by award-winning and highly acclaimed Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Renowned producer Timothy Sheader is the show's director, while Drew McOnie is the cast’s choreographer.
Likewise, the production will feature choreography by Olivier Award-winning Drew McOnie, musical direction by Tom Deering, designs by the visionary Tom Scutt, lighting designs by the brilliant Lee Curran, and sound designs by the renowned Nick Lidster. Producer David Ian mentioned that he was excited to bring this production to life on tour. “Our team has created a fresh and bold new version of a beloved classic which will enthrall both longtime fans of the show and delight those seeing it for the very first time,” he continued.
The Broadway show’s tale straightforwardly recounts The Passion of Jesus Christ, including the tribulations and uprising that resulted in his crucifixion. In contrast to other musicals of the day, the composition was revolutionary and challengingly original, thanks to its ROCK OPERA structure.
