This October, Hamilton will be playing in Sheas Performing Arts Center, the top-rated theatre of Buffalo and the greatest possible venue for this brilliant show. The critically acclaimed and award-winning show goes on to tell its epic story from theatre to theatre all over the Nation.
Getting its start off Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was not instantly the Broadway play that you will see today. Lin-Manuel Miranda has spoken honestly about its beginnings, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda sharing that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That singular performance earned praise and a well-earned standing ovation from the audience at the time, including former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and directly led to Miranda’s production of the Hamilton musical we see now.
Because of his history in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also taken influences from other great theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which is based on a similar theme that tells the history of a struggle, and overcoming that struggle, as opposed to the traditional musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very positive and happy. Hamilton is no different, being about the difficulties arising as an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who rose to power and became the first American Treasury Secretary. With the greatest respect to its source material, Hamilton shows us both sides of Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only giving us a glimpse into his character and struggle, but also his impact and effect in being able to powerfully shape the Nation during its time period.
By telling this story, Hamilton continues to display its relevance in our modern culture and even international public discourse, confronting questions and issues that are highly relevant not only to America, but also globally. Even the use of musical genres like hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the main score has solidified its place in modern culture, making it one of the most relevant hit Buffalo musicals today.
